The Year Started Right with Overhead Door Company of Lafayette

January 04, 2011 By: Scott Whitley Category: Life, Local Businesses

I had a wonderful Holiday vacation time with my wife this Christmas season. We spent a week and a half off our computers and away from anything work related. Neither she nor I get or take much time off from our fairly busy work schedules so this little vacation from work was a treat for both of us. The chance to focus on each other and leave the business side of life aside for awhile is a thing that we should do more often but sometimes forget in the day to day push to be productive and profitable.

We did have some of the normal running here and there that comes with living three hours from your extended family. We took three extended road trips to see our parents, siblings and their children and their grandchildren. All are doing fairly well so that was another reason for feeling good about our time off for the holidays.

As all good things do this time came to an end this Monday January 3rd. It was time to put our noses back to the grindstone and get to the business of making a living. I loaded up my Trailblazer and pushed the button on my garage door opener and … Nothing! My garage door would not open!

I thought I was going to work. Didn’t happen. My wife and I spent time looking online at the troubleshooting section of our garage door opener to see if we could figure out what was wrong and fix it so we could leave. Nothing worked. I couldn’t even raise the door manually. It simply would not budge. Finally I started calling local garage door repair companies.

The first phone call I made was to someone who couldn’t help and didn’t know much beyond telling me to try someone else. The second company I talked to was expensive. Plain and simple. I will not say who they are but I will say that if you find yourself in this position, take time to call around for the best deal. It makes a difference. And they were booked until the next day at the earliest. The third company I spoke to, The Original Overhead Door Company of Lafayette, was reasonably priced and showed up and our house within 30 minuted of my phone call.

Their service was quick, the men who did the work were very courteous and professional and I was impressed with how quick they got the door working again. They could have drawn out the process and charged me more labor. They didn’t. They could have told me I needed new parts. They didn’t. They found what was wrong, fixed it in about a half hour and were on their way to their next call. Their company work vehicle was clean and professional looking. In case you can’t tell, I was impressed. We have all had our brushes with mediocre techs who could care less and who were only in it for the most money. The Original Overhead Door Company of Lafayette was not in that category and I will use their services again when the need arises.

Through all of this, I was able to get a little more time at home with my wife before I had to start my work week. That was the icing on the cake, or the blessing in disguise from a event that we thought would cost us more money and time but did not. I am back to the business at hand and so in my wife. We are already looking forward to the next bit of time we can steal for ourselves as a couple but as least we know who to turn to in Lafayette Indiana to get garage door repair, The Original Overhead Door Company of Lafayette. If you need any work done the call them Toll Free at 800-240-9570 or at 765-742-5844. And I hope personally for all of you that you are finding time to be with the ones you love. Time is precious.

Have a great Lafayette Day!

Winter Weather Driving

December 16, 2010 By: Scott Whitley Category: Community

Burrr! It sure is cold out there. It seems that we are having an old fashioned Winter in the making. Anyone over the age of 45 will remember how the Winters used to be here in the Midwest. We could count on at least 2 to 3 honest to goodness blizzards in Illinois and Indiana each Winter. Everyone who had a little extra money owned a snowmobile and there was generally enough snow for people to use them for much of the Winter.

Then we went into the weather patterns of the last 25 years or so. Not as much snow and definitely not as many blizzards. That all seems to have gone by the wayside so far this year. We have had more cold weather and snow in the Midwest and in Lafayette in particular than in several years and it isn’t even officially Winter on the calendar yet!winter car accident photo

So that leads me to my point. Road conditions here in the close of 2010 and coming into the holiday season are looking much worse than we usually deal with. Just today as I was traveling down the Interstate highway, I saw the aftermath of an accident involving a van pulling a camper trailer. The van looked OK, but the camper consisted of the metal frame and wheels intact and the rest of the camper shredded into little pieces that looked no bigger than sticks you would cut to put into your fireplace. The poor people who owned the camper basically lost everything in the camper.

That accident is not the only one I have seen this year so far. There have been too many people hurt and killed already this Winter driving season. I want to plead with you for the sake of you, your family, friends and the sake of all the other people on the road over the holidays, please drive safely! I want you to have a wonderful Christmas and New Year and I want to see you and yours return safely home from your travels during these holidays and even into the rest of the Winter. You are a precious life. Please be safe Lafayette.

Christmas Time in Indiana

December 11, 2010 By: Scott Whitley Category: Community

Its that time of the year again. Time for putting up the Christmas lights, decorating the tree, and finishing up all your gift shopping. Lafayette is full of events this time of year.

Santa at Oaklawn Acres Rossville IndianaI especially love to drive around with my wife and look at the Christmas lights displays done by individuals and by cities. One of my favorites is the display of lights at Oaklawn Acres at Cottrell Farms in Rossville Indiana. It is quite a light display for a private citizen and it is free to view. They do take donations to help defray the cost. To see their website and learn more about the display go to http://www.oaklawnacres.com/.

Another light display that Leah and I like to see is the Circle of Lights display in Indianapolis. And of course we have to make a trip to the Circle Centre Mall while there. There is nothing like the festive atmosphere while walking around the Circle and seeing all the other people enjoying themselves too.

Another must see event of the season is the Living Nativity at the Faith Baptist Church on the East side of Lafayette on Hwy 26. The have literally hundreds of people and animals involved in the live nativity scene. A great place to go to see the original reason for the season. To learn more about the Living Nativity go to the Faith Baptist Living Nativity page at http://www.faithlafayette.org/page616.aspx.

Whatever your personal preference, there are many other events that take place in the Lafayette area over the Christmas season. To see an events calendar with a more extensive list of fun things to do go to http://www.homeofpurdue.com/calendar.aspx. Have fun and please have a safe holiday.
