Great Things to do in Lafayette this Week

November 01, 2010 By: Scott Whitley Category: Community, Life

If you are looking for something to do this week in the Lafayette area then you are in luck. There are several things happening that you can check out.

On both Thursday and Friday evening at 7:30 pm the Loeb Playhouse will feature “The Real Dr. Strangelove: Edward Teller and the Battle for the H-Bomb”. The excerpt from the convocations webpage states “It’s the dawn of the Cold War, a time fraught with suspicion and fear as the nuclear arms race escalates and a war in Korea looms, and two of the world’s most brilliant scientists and collaborators turn against each other in a battle over the future of nuclear weapons. While Edward Teller pushes for the creation of the H-bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, turns pacifist and lobbies for control of international nuclear power. Now the government will stop at nothing to neutralize Oppenheimer, and Teller is their star witness. Presented in radio play format, this riveting docudrama examines the gripping events that set the United States on the path to becoming the strongest military power on the planet-as well as the dramatic consequences. L.A. Theatre Works will return to the Loeb stage with a star-studded cast, following their previous Purdue performance of The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial, which starred Ed Asner.”

If you are a Purdue sports fan then you can show your support for the football team by going to the “Boiler Up at the Boiler Bridge Walk” on November 5th at 5:45 pm. This is your chance to cheer your favorite players as they cross the The John Myers Pedestrian Bridge. You also have a chance to get some free team spirit items that will be given away to supporters that line the bridge as the walk takes place. Then you can attend the Purdue vs Wisconsin game on Saturday the 6th with a 12:01 kickoff at Ross Ade Stadium in West Lafayette.

If you are like me and are a wolf fan then the Wolf Park Howl Nights on Friday the 5th and Saturday the 6th at 7:30 pm are great fun. You can meet the wolves as they come up to the bleachers to participate in the Wolf Park lecture on wolves and wolf behavior. You are then encouraged to howl at the wolves and listen as they very readily respond in kind. If Howl nights doesn’t whet your appetite for the wolves of Wolf Park then come back out Sunday afternoon from 1 to 3 pm to watch the Wolf and Bison demonstration that features a live demonstration staring the wolves and bison of Wolf Park. An excerpt from the Wolf Park website states, “Watch what happens when predator meets prey. Visitors will be able to see how wolves test their prey for weakness and how the bison defend themselves and their calves by chasing the wolves away. Although no animals are ever injured, you will be given a unique insight in how wolves hunt and how difficult it is to be a predator in the wild.”

There is always more than enough to fill your time if you live in the Lafayette area. Just remember. Be safe. And make sure you enjoy yourself.

Purdue’s Ryan Kerrigan

October 21, 2010 By: Scott Whitley Category: Sports

Here is a link to a great story about Ryan Kerrigan, defensive end on the Purdue football team this year. To quote the story, “At 6-foot-4 and 263 pounds, Kerrigan bench presses 475 pounds, yet has the speed to track down running backs.”

This guy is impressive. For those of you who may not know, he is part of the push by Purdue to clinch a 3-0 Big Ten Conference start if they defeat the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday 23rd at Ohio State. I think they are going to get it done in Ohio this Saturday. Here’s hoping!

This Weekend in Lafayette September 17 through 19, 2010

September 17, 2010 By: Scott Whitley Category: Events

There are always things to do in Lafayette Indiana. That is one of the things I like about this town. Tonight, as I write, Casting Crowns is playing a concert in West Lafayette on the Purdue University campus in the Elliot Hall of Music. I would have liked to have gone to the concert but it was not to be on this weekend. Work and life get in the way of play and recreation so often but what are you going to do? You have to work.

Another great event happening in the Lafayette area this weekend is the Brookston Apple Festival. It takes place this Saturday, September 18th, from 7 am-6 pm in Brookston Indiana and features town wide yard sales, food booths, and plenty of street entertainment. My wife and I have enjoyed the festival in the past and recommend it for a great way to spend your Saturday.

Also this weekend is the Lafayette Farmers market featuring fresh garden vegetables, fruits, flowers, baked goods, crafts, honey, jams and jellies. The market will be held at 5th Street between Main and Columbia Street between 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For more information about the Farmer’s Market go to the following link, www.lafayettefarmersmarket.com.

For you Purdue fans, there is the “Boiler Up at the Boiler Bridge Walk” on Saturday evening at 5:45 p.m. at the John Myers Pedestrian Bridge on the West Lafayette side of bridge. Make sure to come out and see the football team take part in the walk along with the “special marshals”, a Purdue pep band, Purdue Pete, Purdue cheerleaders, and the Boilermaker Special. The team will have fan items to give away to the fans who line the sides of the walk way, courtesy of many local area businesses.

Whatever you choose to do this weekend, remember to do it safely. And have fun!
