Watermelon for Wolves Party

June 27, 2011 By: Scott Whitley Category: Community, Environment, Events, Life

Coming up on July 2, 2011 the residents of Wolf Park just outside of Battleground Indiana will be having the time of their lives at the 11th annual Watermelon for Wolves Party. The following is the latest press release from Wolf Park with all the information about this great event.

“Wolf Park is having its 11th annual Watermelon for Wolves Party! Join us at 2:00pm on Saturday, July 2 when we will give each wolf, fox and coyote his or her very own cold watermelon, stuffed with treats such as pig ears, cheese, and
dog biscuits. Visitors are invited to watch as each animal enjoys their summery treat.

Our wolves really enjoy receiving their watermelons. Unique treats provide environmental enrichment, giving our
critters something to roll on, stuff their noses in, paw, lick, chew, scent-mark, and defend. This year our new pups will also get to enjoy watermelons— their first ever!!

Wolf and Watermelon

We have an extra treat for the humans this year— Gibson’s Shaved Ice will be here with flavored ice treats for just $1. Visitors and wolves can both cool off and enjoy their day. Gibson’s Ice will kindly share the proceeds with Wolf Park!

Want to help support Wolf Park’s efforts to cool off the wolves, and to do our important educational work? Tell our critters
you think they’re special by giving a donation for a nice, full, stuffed watermelon complete with pig ears and “snausages”. For our summer watermelon fundraiser, in return for your $25 donation we will send you a photo of the animal of
your choice enjoying its watermelon. See details online at www.wolfpark.org

General Admission: $7 adults, $5 kids age 6-13, kids 5 and under and Wolf Park Members are always free. For more information call (765) 567-2265 or visit our website at www.wolfpark.org.”

Great Things to do in Lafayette this Week

November 01, 2010 By: Scott Whitley Category: Community, Life

If you are looking for something to do this week in the Lafayette area then you are in luck. There are several things happening that you can check out.

On both Thursday and Friday evening at 7:30 pm the Loeb Playhouse will feature “The Real Dr. Strangelove: Edward Teller and the Battle for the H-Bomb”. The excerpt from the convocations webpage states “It’s the dawn of the Cold War, a time fraught with suspicion and fear as the nuclear arms race escalates and a war in Korea looms, and two of the world’s most brilliant scientists and collaborators turn against each other in a battle over the future of nuclear weapons. While Edward Teller pushes for the creation of the H-bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, turns pacifist and lobbies for control of international nuclear power. Now the government will stop at nothing to neutralize Oppenheimer, and Teller is their star witness. Presented in radio play format, this riveting docudrama examines the gripping events that set the United States on the path to becoming the strongest military power on the planet-as well as the dramatic consequences. L.A. Theatre Works will return to the Loeb stage with a star-studded cast, following their previous Purdue performance of The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial, which starred Ed Asner.”

If you are a Purdue sports fan then you can show your support for the football team by going to the “Boiler Up at the Boiler Bridge Walk” on November 5th at 5:45 pm. This is your chance to cheer your favorite players as they cross the The John Myers Pedestrian Bridge. You also have a chance to get some free team spirit items that will be given away to supporters that line the bridge as the walk takes place. Then you can attend the Purdue vs Wisconsin game on Saturday the 6th with a 12:01 kickoff at Ross Ade Stadium in West Lafayette.

If you are like me and are a wolf fan then the Wolf Park Howl Nights on Friday the 5th and Saturday the 6th at 7:30 pm are great fun. You can meet the wolves as they come up to the bleachers to participate in the Wolf Park lecture on wolves and wolf behavior. You are then encouraged to howl at the wolves and listen as they very readily respond in kind. If Howl nights doesn’t whet your appetite for the wolves of Wolf Park then come back out Sunday afternoon from 1 to 3 pm to watch the Wolf and Bison demonstration that features a live demonstration staring the wolves and bison of Wolf Park. An excerpt from the Wolf Park website states, “Watch what happens when predator meets prey. Visitors will be able to see how wolves test their prey for weakness and how the bison defend themselves and their calves by chasing the wolves away. Although no animals are ever injured, you will be given a unique insight in how wolves hunt and how difficult it is to be a predator in the wild.”

There is always more than enough to fill your time if you live in the Lafayette area. Just remember. Be safe. And make sure you enjoy yourself.
